EXPRESS ENTRY

A Structured, Points-Based Pathway to Permanent Residence

Express Entry is Canada’s points-based system for managing permanent residence applications under key economic immigration programs. Given its competitive structure and changing selection criteria, informed planning and accurate profile preparation are essential.

How Express Entry Works

  • Express Entry is a selection system, not an immigration program.
  • It manages permanent residence applications under three federal programs:
    • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – for skilled workers with qualifying foreign or Canadian experience
    • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – for individuals with eligible skilled work experience in Canada
    • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – for qualified trades workers meeting experience and certification or job-offer requirements
  • Eligible candidates are placed in the Express Entry pool and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

How Candidates Are Ranked (CRS)

  • Candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
  • Points are awarded based on factors such as:

Candidates with higher CRS scores may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) during:

  • General draws, or
  • Category-based draws targeting specific priorities such as healthcare, STEM occupations, or French-language proficiency.

Who Express Entry Is For

Express Entry is intended for skilled workers who meet the eligibility requirements of one or more federal economic immigration programs. You may qualify if you meet the criteria under one of the following:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

  • At least one year of continuous skilled work experience within the last 10 years
  • Work experience may be gained in Canada or abroad
  • Meets minimum education and language requirements

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

  • At least one year of eligible skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years
  • Work experience must have been gained under authorized temporary resident status

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

  • Qualification in a designated skilled trade
  • Relevant work experience in the trade
  • Meets language and certification or job offer requirements

General Requirements

In addition to program-specific criteria, applicants must generally:

  • Meet language proficiency requirements (often CLB 7 or higher, depending on the program)
  • Demonstrate sufficient settlement funds, unless exempt (e.g. currently authorized to work in Canada)

We assess eligibility across the Express Entry programs and provide guidance on profile preparation and CRS considerations based on individual circumstances

Express Entry vs Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): What’s the Difference?

Feature

Express Entry (EE)

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Type

Federal selection system managing economic immigration applications

Provincial and territorial nomination pathways addressing regional needs

Processing Timeline

Generally shorter once an Invitation to Apply (ITA) is issued, subject to IRCC processing times

Timelines vary by province and stream and may involve both provincial and federal stages

Points-Based System

Yes — candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

Not always points-based; some streams are occupation- or employer-driven

Job Offer Requirement

Not required*

Often required, particularly for employer-driven streams

Who Selects Candidates

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Provincial or territorial governments, based on local labor market priorities

Eligibility Streams

Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades

Skilled worker, employer-driven, regional, or occupation-specific streams

Interaction Between EE & PNP

A provincial nomination can add 600 CRS points, significantly improving ranking

Some PNP streams are aligned with Express Entry, while others operate outside it

Generally Suitable For

Skilled workers with competitive profiles across age, education, language, and experience

Applicants with job offers, provincial ties, specific occupations, or lower CRS scores

The most appropriate pathway depends on individual circumstances, eligibility criteria, and program availability at the time of assessment.

Planning Consideration:

Some applicants pursue a combined approach by maintaining an active Express Entry profile while also exploring Provincial Nominee Program options, where eligible. This can support broader pathway planning, subject to program availability and individual circumstances.

Express Entry is a competitive, points-based system where eligibility and profile accuracy matter. Before proceeding, a clear assessment of your circumstances is essential.

We provide structured guidance beginning with a professional eligibility review, followed by informed advice on profile preparation and pathway planning, aligned with current program requirements.
